- Search engine marketing, also known as SEM, is a type of online
marketing or internet marketing that attempts to gain results for websites
by promoting their presence the SERPs (search engine results pages) via paid
inclusion, PPC (Pay per click advertising), SEO and link building.
SEMPO (Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization), are the leaders
of SEM, and have search engine optimization (SEO) information and courses.
The New York Times defines SEM as 'the practice of buying paid search
listings'
In 2008, Australian advertisers spent $1.4 billion on search engine
marketing, a 87% increase over the previous years results, & a 850% increase
over the 2007 year.
The leaders of SEM are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing and Microsoft
adCenter.
Search Engine Marketing is growing much faster than traditional offline
advertising such as TV, Radio, Magazines and Newspapers.
In fact SEM is growing much faster than other channels of online marketing
such as banner advertising and affiliate marketing.
Many marketers have trouble comprehending search engine marketing and they
depend upon 3rd party agencies to implement and manage their search
marketing.
SEM relates to SEO but focuses on return on investment (ROI) strategies.
SEM is often used to describe activities including researching, writing,
submitting and positioning a Web page within search engines to achieve

SEM includes things such as search engine optimization, paid inclusion and
other related activities that will impact visabilty and traffic to your Web
site.
